Safety Data Sheets, Section 12
Section 12 of a Safety Data Sheet is titled "Ecological Information." It provides information for evaluating the environmental impact of the chemical should it be accidentally released into the environment.
Section 12 may include the following information:
- Results from toxicity test data. When possible, the toxicity tests should focus on aquatic and/or terrestrial organisms
- If the chemical remains in the environment or if the chemical degrades - including information on oxidation, hydrolysis, biodegradation factors such as the Octanol-Water Partition Coefficient (Kow) and Bioconcentration factor (BCF)
- Results of tests of bioaccumulation potential
- The potential for a substance to move from the soil to the groundwater
- Other known adverse effects, including environmental fate, endocrine disruption potential, ozone layer depletion potential, photochemical ozone creation potential, and global warming potential
OSHA lists this section as non-mandatory.
