Safety Data Sheets, Section 8
Section 8 of a Safety Data Sheet is titled "Exposure Controls/Personal Protection." It describes the ways to minimize worker exposure, including recommendations for permissible exposure limits (PELs), recommendations for personal protective measures, and any special requirements such as the appropriate engineering controls.
- Exposure limits (PELs) - This includes OSHA requirements for PELs, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), and any other exposure limit used or recommended by the chemical manufacturer, the distributor, or the supplier that has prepared the SDS.
- Appropriate engineering controls - This includes using local exhaust ventilation or only using the chemical in an enclosed system.
- Personal protective measures recommendations - This may include methods to prevent illness or injury from exposure to chemicals by using personal protective equipment (PPE), such as protective clothing or respirators, as well as the types of material best suited for handling the hazard.
