Site Control Program Components - General Standard Operating Procedure Guidelines

Each work site will have its own hazards (and therefore have different, site-specific safe work practices). However, there are standard safe work practices that many work sites can use. Here are some standard safe work practices:

  • Ensure that all onsite internal combustion engines have spark arrestors that meet requirements for hazardous atmospheres.
  • Only refuel in safe areas.
  • Never fuel engines if the vehicle is running.
  • Do not allow ignition sources near a fuel area.
  • Before shutting off a vehicle, lower all blades and buckets to the ground and set the parking brakes.
  • Have an ongoing maintenance program for all tools and equipment. Inspect all tools and moving equipment regularly. Be sure parts remain secure and intact (without cracks or areas of weakness). Ensure equipment turns smoothly, does not wobble, and operates according to the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Immediately repair or replace all defective items.
  • Keep maintenance and repair logs.
  • Store tools in clean, secure areas to avoid them being damaged, lost, or stolen.
  • Store all heavy equipment used in the Exclusion Zone in that zone until job completion.
  • Entirely decontaminate all equipment from the Exclusion Zone before moving it into the clean zone.
