Site Work Zones
As part of a site control program, employers must establish site work zones. Employers should detail the activities that should occur in each zone and how to move personnel from one zone to another. This is to ensure a reduction in accidental spreading of hazardous substances from contaminated areas to clean areas.
The zones are as follows:
- Exclusion Zone, which is the contaminated area
- Contamination Reduction Zone (CRZ), which is the area where decontamination takes place
- Support Zone, which is the uncontaminated area where workers should not be exposed to hazardous conditions
To delineate these three zones, employers should use the following:
- Results from sampling and monitoring
- Results from an evaluation of potential routes and amount of contaminant dispersion in the event of a release
