Toilets
Employers must provide toilets. Toilet rooms must meet the following requirements, as detailed in 29 CFR 1919.142(d):
- Each toilet room must be accessible without an individual passing through a sleeping room.
- A toilet room must be within 200 feet of the door of each sleeping room.
- A toilet room cannot be closer than 100 feet to any sleeping room, dining room, lunch area, or kitchen.
- Toilet rooms must have a window. This window cannot be less than 6 square feet. It can only open directly to the outside area (unless "satisfactorily ventilated").
- Every outside opening must be screened using 16-mesh material.
- No fixture, water closet, chemical toilet, or urinal shall be located in a room used for other than toilet purposes.
Shared toilet rooms in multi-family shelters and barracks-style facilities must have separate toilet rooms for each sex. These toilet rooms must be marked "for men" and "for women" using "signs printed in English and in the native language of the persons occupying the camp, or marked with easily understood pictures or symbols." If the toilet rooms for men and women are within the same building, then a solid wall or partition must separate them. This wall or partition must go from the floor to the ceiling or roof.
The number of water closets or privy seats depends upon the maximum number of persons (for each sex) that may inhabit the camp. There must be one unit for every 15 people; the minimum is two units.
