Walking Working Surfaces Safety

Slips, trips, and falls cause the majority of general industry accidents, accounting for over 8 million emergency room visits, and are the leading cause of nonfatal, medically treated injuries in the U.S.

Fatalities and injuries resulting from slips, trips, and falls are often preventable, and they usually result from insufficient identification of hazards, inadequate training, and insufficient application of proper risk control measures.

OSHA has created safety regulations for various aspects of the workplace. With regards to walking working surfaces, OSHA advises that all places of employment, including passageways, storerooms, and service rooms, be kept clean and orderly. Workplace aisles and passageways should be kept clear and in good repair with no obstructions that could create a hazard. A safe clearance in aisles and doorways should be present whenever mechanical handling equipment, such as forklifts, are used.
