Written Safety and Health Program
In addition to having a written Hazard Communication Program, employers with worksites containing hazardous wastes must additionally develop another written program: the written safety and health program.
A written safety and health program is designed to identify, evaluate, and control safety and health hazards. It also provides information for emergency response for hazardous waste operations.
29 CFR 1910.120(b)(1)(i) states that a written safety and health program must include the following components:
- An organizational structure
- A comprehensive work plan
- A safety and training program
- A medical surveillance program
- The employer's standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safety and health
- A site-specific safety and health plan (that need not repeat the employer's SOPs for safety and health)
