After humans use antimicrobial products, they wash these products down the drain or otherwise dispose of them, thus releasing antimicrobial products into water systems.

Many antimicrobials are toxic to aquatic organisms and are not broken down through wastewater treatment. These antimicrobials can later make their way into soil used for agricultural purposes.

In the end, these antimicrobials end up in foods that humans consume.
