Hazardous Substance - 49 CFR 172.101

The U.S Department of Transportation 49 CFR 172.101 is a code containing a table of transportation-related materials considered hazardous.

For each listed material, the table does the following:

  • Identifies the hazard class: The table categorizes hazard classes numerically from 1-9 or labels them "forbidden" if transportation of the material is not allowed.
  • Gives the proper shipping name: Each hazardous material has an identification number. The identification number begins with the letters UN followed by four digits (for example, carbon is UN1362).
  • Specifies packaging requirements: This includes the labeling, packaging, and quantity limits for shipping hazardous materials via aircraft and storing hazardous materials on vessels.
