Hazardous Substance - Definitions
The United States federal guidelines define a hazardous substance in four different ways:
- By the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) (42 U.S.C. 9601), Section 103(14)
- By the U.S. Department of Transportation 49 CFR 172.101 and appendices
- By the OSHA definition of a hazardous substance
- By being defined through the OSH Act as a hazardous waste
This means that all hazardous wastes are hazardous substances. Therefore, it is important to understand the definition of hazardous waste because it is also a hazardous substance. Each of these definitions will be explained in the following slides.
