Hazardous Substance

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act defines a hazardous substance as any substance that results in adverse effects on employee health or safety.

OSHA classifies hazardous substances as any "biologic agent and other disease-causing agents" that may cause the following adverse effects:

  • Death
  • Disease
  • Behavioral abnormalities
  • Cancer
  • Genetic mutations
  • Physiological malfunctions (including malfunctions in reproduction)
  • Physical deformations in exposed persons or their offspring

An individual may be exposed to hazardous substances in the following ways:

  • When the hazardous substance is released into the environment
  • Through direct ingestion
  • Through direct inhalation
  • Through assimilation into any person, either indirectly from the environment or indirectly by ingestion through food chains

According to OSHA, "Information on the chemical, physical, and toxicologic properties of each compound known or expected to occur on-site should be recorded on a Safety Data Sheet.
