Hazardous Waste Operations

A hazardous waste operation is any operation conducted that is related to hazardous waste. This is defined in 29 CFR (titled Labor).

Any company that is in charge of a hazardous waste site must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have a preliminary site evaluation conducted by a qualified person to identify possible site hazards and assist in choosing methods of employee protection.
  2. Provide a written and easily accessible safety and health program that identifies, evaluates, and controls safety and health hazards and provides information regarding emergency response.
  3. Institute a site control program that includes a site map, site work zones, site communications, safe work practices, the use of the buddy system, and information on how to locate the nearest medical aid.
  4. Provide employee training for all personnel on a hazardous waste site.
  5. Provide medical surveillance of employees who work at permissible exposure limits for hazardous substances or above permissible exposure limits for hazardous substances.
  6. Provide medical surveillance of employees annually (at minimum) and when a current employee moves to a new worksite, when a worker is exposed to hazardous chemicals due to unexpected releases of waste, when a worker is exposed to hazardous chemicals due to emergency releases of waste, and when a worker's employment ends.
