Decontamination is the "process of removing or neutralizing contaminants that have accumulated on personnel and equipment."

Decontamination is crucial to ensuring health and safety at a hazardous waste site. The decontamination process protects personnel from substances that could eventually contaminate employees and tools, protective clothing, respiratory equipment, or any other site equipment.

Decontamination also decreases the possibility of transferring dangerous materials to a clean area, prevents the unintentional mixing of chemicals, and protects the community by preventing the transportation of contaminants off-site.

Decontamination is complete when workers have removed the hazardous materials to the point that the possibility of any future adverse health effect has been eliminated.
