Heavy Metals - Exposure to Arsenic
Arsenic is a chemical element that exists naturally and is also manufactured. Over the years, arsenic production and use have increased the amount of arsenic in the environment. Foods can then absorb arsenic from contaminated water or soil. Some foods tend to have higher levels of arsenic because of how they absorb the chemical through the soil. These foods include mushrooms, rice and other grains, apples, and grapes.
Arsenic is also found in pressure-treated wood for outdoor structures manufactured before 2004. It can also be found in some drinking water and in cigarette smoke.
