Heavy Metals - Exposure to Mercury
Mercury is a chemical element that exists naturally and is also manufactured. Coal-burning plants release mercury into the air and the water. In the water, bacteria convert mercury into methylmercury, which is toxic. Beginning with fish, methylmercury makes its way up the food chain. Humans experience high levels of mercury after consuming fish with high levels of mercury (such as tuna).
Additionally, mercury is found in the following products:
- Face creams
- Silver-colored dental fillings
- Glass thermometers
- Barometers
- Fluorescent lights
