Required Training - Refresher Training
Every 12 months, eight hours of refresher training is required in order to maintain HAZWOPER certification and to work on sites requiring HAZWOPER certification. This eight-hour refresher training applies to both 24-hour and 40-hour certifications.
Refresher training applies to all employees, managers, and supervisors.
Refresher training reviews the content from the initial training. It also provides an opportunity to review the employee's experiences within the past year related to hazardous materials. Additionally, refresher training is an opportunity for workers to learn new methods for dealing with hazardous substances.
A good refresher training program includes the following elements:
- A review of the same topics that were required for initial certification
- A review of the employee's past year's experiences as related to safety (including any critique of incidents that have occurred in the past year that can serve as training examples)
- An introduction to new procedures, technology, or changes in federal, state, or local regulations that are pertinent to employees
