Assembling Spill Kits
Many spill kits are commercially available. A spill kit may be assembled by the employer as well.
Universal Spill Kits
This kit is for general use and can be used for a variety of oil- or water-based spills, along with basic chemical spills. At minimum, this kit should contain:
- Nitrile safety gloves
- Eye goggles
- Shoe covers
- Sorbents
- Absorbent pads
- Disposal bags
- A spill containment handbook
Battery Acid Spill Kits
A battery acid spill kit should be kept anywhere batteries are kept or stored such as a garage, forklift storage, and charging stations. At minimum, a battery acid spill kit should contain the following:
- Nitrile safety gloves
- Eye goggles
- Storage bags
- Poly apron
- Acid neutralizing polymers
- Specialized scoop
Mercury Spill Kits
Mercury spill kits are necessary anywhere mercury is present. Some examples are laboratories, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities. A mercury spill kit must contain, at minimum:
- Nitrile safety gloves
- Eye goggles
- Shoe covers
- Sorbents
- Absorbent pads
- Disposal bags
- Amalgamation powder
- Indicator powder
- Vapor suppressor bottle
- Aspirator bottle
- Chemical sponge
- A spill containment handbook
Biohazard or Blood Borne Pathogen Spill Kits
Anywhere that a biological spill may occur, a biohazard spill kit must be present. These kits are slightly different than the previous kits mentioned, and they must include the following items:
- Biohazard sorbents
- Neoprene, long sleeved gloves
- Sanitizing surface wipes
- Sanitizing hand wipes
