Action Item 3: Train workers on their specific roles in the safety and health program.

Encourage workers to incorporate assigned safety and health responsibilities into their daily routines and activities.

To accomplish this action item, management should do the following:

• Instruct workers on how to report injuries, illnesses, incidents, and concerns. If the company uses a computerized reporting system, ensure that all employees have the basic computer skills and computer access they need to submit a report.
• Provide opportunities for workers to ask questions and provide feedback during and after the training.
• As the program evolves, institute a more formal process for determining the training needs of the workers who are responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the program.
• Instruct workers who have been assigned specific roles within the safety and health program on how they should carry out the following responsibilities:
  • Hazard recognition and controls
  • Participation in incident investigations
  • Program evaluation and improvement
