Hazard Communication Program, Step 5

Step 5. Inform and train employees.

Paragraph (h) of the HCS requires that employers train employees before their initial assignments. In addition, this training must be conducted in a manner and language that employees can understand.

Training must occur before the initial assignment and again when new hazards are introduced into the work area. Training must inform employees about the hazardous chemicals in their work area and teach employees about appropriate protective measures.

By the end of training, employers must make sure that their workers know or understand the following concepts:

  • Understand they are exposed to hazardous chemicals
  • Know that labels and SDSs can provide them with information on the hazards of a chemical
  • Know that they may consult SDSs when needed
  • Have a general understanding of what information is provided on labels and SDSs
  • Know how to access SDSs
  • Be aware of the protective measures available in their workplace
  • Know how to use or implement these protective measures
  • Know who they should contact if an issue arises
  • Know where and how to obtain additional information
