HMIS - Red Bar

The red bar indicates the flammability hazard. Numbers 0 through 4 are broken down into the following categories:

0 - There is a minimal flammability hazard.

1 - There is a slight flammability hazard.

  • The chemicals must be pre-heated considerably before ignition or combustion could occur.
  • Chemicals that must be exposed to a temperature of 1,500 °F for a period of 5 minutes or less to burn.
  • Liquids, solids, or semi-solids that have a flashpoint of 200 °F or higher.

2 - There is a moderate flammability hazard.

  • These chemicals must be moderately heated before ignition could occur.
  • Under high temperatures, these chemicals might release vapor that, when combined with air, could become hazardous.
  • Liquids with a flashpoint above 100 °F (but not above 200 °F), solids, and semi-solids easily give off flammable vapors.

3 - There is a serious flammability hazard.

  • Liquid and solid chemicals that can easily be ignited.
  • Liquids that have a flashpoint below 73 °F and a boiling point at 100 °F.
  • Solid chemicals such as dusts or fibers that will burn rapidly, but not explosive when combined with air.

4 - There is a severe flammability hazard.

  • Chemicals that will vaporize at standard atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures.
  • Chemicals that have a flashpoint below 73 °F.
  • Any chemical that has the ability to form an explosive mixture spontaneously.
