HMIS

The Hazardous Material Information System (HMIS) is a bar system. It was developed by the American Coatings Association. These four bars are color coded for the type of hazard incurred, along with a scale rating from 0 to 4 indicating the level of the hazard. The bars are blue for health, red for flammability, yellow or orange for physical or reactivity hazards, and white for personal protective equipment.

Blue Bar

The blue bar indicates the health hazard of the material. If an asterisk is present, it is considered a chronic hazard. Numbers 0 through 4 are broken down into the following categories:

0 - There is no significant risk to health.

1 - There is a possibility of minor reversible injury or irritation.

2 - Minor or temporary injuries may occur.

3 - Major injuries are likely without prompt medical attention.

4 - Life-threatening, permanent, or major damage will occur with single or repeated exposure.
