How the CFR is Organized

The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is the codification of the rules published in the Federal Register by the departments and agencies of the federal government.

The CFR is divided into 50 titles that represent broad areas subject to federal regulation. For example, Title 7 is Agriculture; Title 29 is Labor; and Title 47 is Telecommunication.

Each title is divided into chapters, which usually bear the name of the issuing agency, such as OSHA. Each chapter is further subdivided into parts that cover specific regulatory areas. All parts are organized in sections, and most citations to the CFR refer to material at the section level. The citation includes the title and part, and may include the section and paragraph.

  • The title is the numeric value to the left of "CFR"
  • The part is the numeric value to the right of "CFR" and before the period. It is sometimes preceded by the symbol §, as in 29 CFR §1910.
  • The section is the numeric value to the right of the period.
