Management Leadership - Action Item 4

Action Item 4: Expect performance.

Management can do this through the following actions:

  • Designating a person (or several people) to lead the new safety program
  • Defining the responsibilities for each person in regard to implementing and maintaining the program
  • Holding each person accountable for his or her responsibilities
  • Providing positive recognition when employees meet or exceed safety and health goals
  • Establishing a work environment in which employees and managers communicate freely and without worry about retaliation for expressing concerns about safety

OSHA notes that "successful programs reward, rather than discipline, workers who identify problems or concerns, much like successful quality programs. Disciplinary measures should be reserved for situations in which an individual manager or worker is uncooperative or becomes an impediment to progress."
