Safety Data Sheets - Section 12, Bioaccumulation Potential

Section 12 may also include the results of tests of bioaccumulation potential (the accumulation of pesticides or chemical in an organism). This information may include the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) and the bioconcentration factor (BCF).

Octanol-Water Partition Coefficient (Kow)

The octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) is the figure used to predict how a hydrophobic chemical may dissolve and migrate into the soil and groundwater. (Hydrophobicity is a trait of some chemicals that fail to dissolve easily in water.) The EPA and other organizations use the Kow number as a guideline for understanding a chemical's toxicity to the environment.

Bioconcentration factor (BCF)

The bioconcentration factor (BCF) is a measurement of a chemical found within the tissue of an aquatic organism.
