Safety Data Sheets - Section 9
Section 9, titled "Physical and Chemical Properties," describes the physical and chemical properties associated with the chemical substance or mixture. This section includes the following information about the chemical:
- Appearance (for example, the physical state or color)
- Upper and lower flammability or explosive limits
- Odor
- Vapor pressure
- Odor threshold
- Vapor density
- pH
- Relative density
- Melting point/freezing point
- Solubility
- Initial boiling point and boiling range
- Flash point
- Evaporation rate
- Flammability (solid, gas)
- Partition coefficient: n-octanol/water
- Auto-ignition temperature
- Decomposition temperature
- Viscosity
The foregoing information might not always be available or relevant to all chemicals; therefore, some SDSs might not include all the above-mentioned details. If this is the case, it is noted in the SDS.
Note that the SDS may also include additional relevant information about the chemical. For example, OSHA suggests that the "dust deflagration index (Kst) for combustible dust, used to evaluate a dust's explosive potential" be listed when applicable.
