Safety and Health Training Program - NFPA Standards

There are two National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards:

  1. NFPA 472: "Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Material Incidents"
  2. NFPA 471: "Recommended Practice for Responding to Hazardous Material Incidents"

These documents provide information regarding the skills and knowledge needed for a high level of first responder awareness and first responder operations. They also provide guidance on improving the skills of HAZMAT technicians and specialists, as well as guidance for the officer who will be in charge of hazardous substance incidents.

OSHA considers these documents to be "excellent resource documents to aid fire departments and other emergency response organizations in developing their training program materials" and states that "employers should consult these standards when they are developing training materials as the standards provide a wealth of knowledge for hazard communication plans and excellent training materials for hazard communication."
