Characterizing Sites
Each work site will have its own specific dangers and pose different challenges to worker safety. For this reason, it is important to conduct a site characterization. Site characterization includes identifying specific hazards and then determining the safety and health control procedures that will protect all site employees. It involves collecting detailed, accurate, and comprehensive information regarding the site and the risks it poses.
Site characterization often serves as the basis for the site safety and health plan you learned about in Unit 3. It includes a preliminary evaluation and then a secondary evaluation. You will now learn about both.
Note that 29 CFR 1910.120(c), "Site characterization and analysis," details site characterization in full.
