Chemical Properties

Chemical properties are the characteristics of a substance that allow it to change from one type of matter into another (or, the characteristic is that the substance does not change). A good example of this is the element iron (Fe), which combines with oxygen and water to produce rust. Other elements might not have this same reaction. Chromium, for example, will not oxidize under the same conditions.

Other characteristics and properties of chemicals to be aware of are:

  • Ignitability
  • Corrosively
  • Reactivity
  • Toxicity
