Chilblains
Chilblains are caused by prolonged and repeated exposure of the skin to temperatures just above freezing and as high as 60°F, often accompanied by high humidity or wet conditions. The cold exposure causes damage to the capillary beds in the skin. It can develop in only a few hours and return with each additional exposure to the cold.
The most common areas affected by chilblains are the cheeks, ears, fingers, and toes. The affected area appears red and swollen, and the skin may be tender, hot to the touch, and itch. The symptoms can worsen and cause aching, prickly sensations, blistering, and numbness. In severe cases, open sores or bleeding lesions may occur.
