Cranes, Derricks, and Rigging

Cranes, derricks, and hoists are pieces of equipment used to lift heavy loads. They are commonly used in construction and clean-up operations. OSHA regulates the use and operation of this equipment in 29 CFR 1926.1400 Subpart CC.

Some dangers related to cranes, hoists, and derricks are obvious. For example, an improperly balanced load could fall and injure employees. However, many dangers related to cranes, hoists, and derricks occur from falls while employees are at the height of the crane and cab, which is why the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations includes so many requirements regarding fall protection. Additionally, accidents may occur when two cranes come into contact with one another or with electrical wires, which is why there are so many codes related to clearance, grounding, and avoiding power lines.

Awareness, attention to detail, and compliance will keep cranes operating safely and in turn keep your worksite safe.
