Employee & Site Safety Guidelines

The following guidelines will further help improve site safety while handling, attaching, and moving loads:

  • Never hoist, lower, or travel while an employee is on the load or hook.
  • Never carry loads over people.
  • Never use a ladder when hands are occupied with other encumbrances.
  • Lower (do not carry) anything that cannot be placed in pockets or belts while going down a ladder.
  • Always store personal items in crane cabs (never leave items out where they can impede operation or cab access).
  • Place tools, oil cans, and other articles in the tool box (never leave loose in the cab).
  • Make sure fire extinguishers meet all requirements.

The swing radius of a rotating crane, derrick, or hoist can hit, pinch, or crush an employee. To ensure worker safety as it relates to swing radius risks, take the following precautions:

  • Train personnel to identify struck-by and pinch/crush hazard areas posed by the rotating superstructure.
  • Fence off the hazard areas with control lines, warning lines, railings, or other barriers.
  • Ensure the operator is informed before an employee enters a hazard area and that the operator does not rotate the superstructure until he/she knows the employee is safe.
  • Develop safe communication operation systems whenever any part of a crane/derrick may be within the working radius of another crane/derrick.
