Forklifts
OSHA regulations that cover forklifts also refer to several other types of vehicles:
- Tractors
- Platform lift trucks
- Motorized hand trucks
- Powered industrial trucks (PITs)
- Other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines
OSHA addresses these vehicles under "Powered Lift Trucks", and these regulations can be found in 29 CFR 1910.178.
It is important that these vehicles are consistently inspected. Never drive a vehicle in need of repair. Report and record any problems immediately to the appropriate people in your workplace. OSHA regulations require that any forklift or PIT not in safe operating condition be removed from service immediately.
Forklifts often operate in environments where certain environmental accommodations are necessary. For example, environments containing flammable materials require that vehicles do not emit sparks or otherwise increase the risk of fire or explosion. Different types of forklifts are therefore needed in specific environmental conditions. There are eleven designations, which identify the truck's power source and safety features. Each type of vehicle is meant for use in specific contexts.
