Hazardous Locations

A special set of rules applies to electrical installations in locations that present a flammability risk. Such locations include facilities where hazardous wastes are present as well as commercial garages, auto body repair shops, aircraft hangars, and gas stations. Each hazardous location is part of a designated class; specific rules apply to each class.

In all such locations, equipment and wiring that is approved as safe for the specific conditions must be used. To be considered safe, the equipment or wiring cannot release electrical or thermal energy under either normal or abnormal conditions. This is to avoid the risk of starting a fire or igniting an explosion. These guidelines can be found in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA-70 guidelines.
