Hyperthermia

Hyperthermia is an illness that occurs when the body overheats because its processes cannot cool the body at the rate needed to maintain its core temperature. Hyperthermia is the state that causes heat-related stress and illnesses, such as heat fatigue, fainting due to overheating, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

The National Institutes of Health cite the following lifestyle factors that can put workers at risk for hyperthermia:

  • Overall health
  • Lifestyle
  • Dehydration
  • Age
  • Air pollution
  • Air temperature

Workers who are affected by the foregoing factors should communicate with supervisors and pace their workloads and the amount of time working in the heat.
