Physical Properties

Physical properties are characteristics of a substance not related to its chemical composition. This can include some of the following characteristics:

  • Vapor density
    • The measure of a vapor in relation to air. Knowing the vapor density will allow you to know whether the gas or vapor will sink or rise in the air in the instance of a release.
  • Color
  • Melting point or freezing point
  • Boiling point
  • Electrical conductivity
  • Vapor pressure
    • The measure of a liquids tendency to evaporate. A high vapor pressure translates to a greater volatility.
  • Flash point
    • The minimum temperature at which a liquid gives off a vapor that is ignitable. This number is an indication of the susceptibility to ignition.
