Potential Eye Irritation Sources

In the previous slide, you learned about the resources employers may consult to determine if and how chemicals pose threats through skin irritation or skin absorption. Chemicals may also irritate the eyes. Once employers use direct-reading instruments to determine chemicals and their concentrations, employers may consult the following resources to determine if the chemicals are eye irritants.

  • OSHA's annotated list of PELs
  • Department of Industrial Relations Table AC-1 (Permissible Exposure Limits for Chemical Contaminants)
  • National Institute for Occupational Health and Public Safety (NIOSH) Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
  • Association Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health (ACGIH) Guide to Occupational Exposure Values (this must be purchased online)
