Potential Skin Absorption & Irritation Sources

The potential for skin absorption and its effects will vary from chemical to chemical. Once employers determine which chemicals are present in the work site, they must identify if the chemical might be absorbed into the skin. This will determine the protective equipment employees must aware.

To determine the potential for skin absorption or irritation, employers may consult numerous sources. OSHA provides Table Z-1, Z-2, and Z-3 (mentioned in the previous slide), as well as an online annotated list of PELs. However, as mentioned in an earlier unit, OSHA also recognizes that other sources provide more detailed lists and more accurate data. OSHA recommends consulting the following sources:

  • Department of Industrial Relations Table AC-1 (Permissible Exposure Limits for Chemical Contaminants)
  • National Institute for Occupational Health and Public Safety (NIOSH) Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
  • Association Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health (ACGIH) Guide to Occupational Exposure Values (this must be purchased online)
