Secondary Evaluation
A secondary evaluation is a much more detailed analysis of the site and its potential hazards. It occurs immediately after site entry. A secondary evaluation occurs in order to do the following:
- Further identify existing hazards
- Assist with the selection of appropriate engineering controls
- Assist with the selection of personal protective equipment (PPE) for future site activities
The evaluation must include the following:
- Exposure monitoring for ionizing radiation and other immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) conditions
- Risk identification based on the presence and concentrations of hazardous substances and communication of the risks to those employees who will be working on the site
The evaluation should also include the following information, when available:
- Location and size of the site
- Site topography
- Site accessibility by air and roads
- Pathways for hazardous substances to disperse
- Description of employee duties
- Time needed to perform a given task
- Present status and capabilities of the emergency response teams
