Site Control Program - Establishing the Exclusion Zone Hotline

The Exclusion Zone contains an outer boundary called the Hotline. To establish the Hotline, management should do the following:

  • Visually survey the immediate site environs.
  • Determine the locations of hazardous substances, visible discolorations, drainage, leachate, and spilled material.
  • Evaluate data from the initial site survey that indicate the presence of ionizing radiation, combustible gases, organic and inorganic gases, particulates, or vapors.
  • Evaluate the results of soil and water sampling.
  • Consider the distances needed to prevent an explosion or fire from affecting personnel outside the Exclusion Zone.
  • Consider the physical area necessary for site operations.
  • Consider meteorological conditions and the potential for contaminants to be blown from the area.
  • Secure or mark the Hotline (using lines, placards, hazard tape or signs, or by enclosing it with physical barriers, such as chains, fences, or ropes).
  • Modify the location of the Hotline when needed (if more information becomes available).
