Periodic Monitoring

Periodic monitoring occurs when work site conditions change or certain situations arise. Examples include the following, as detailed in 29 CFR 1919.120(h)(3):

  • When work begins on a different portion of the site
  • When handling contaminants other than those previously identified in initial and secondary site evaluations
  • When employers plan to initiate a different type of operation (for example, opening a drum versus the previous task of well drilling)
  • When employees handle leaking drums or containers or work in areas with apparent liquid contamination (for example, a spill or lagoon)
