Site Control Program - Site Map
Employers should prepare a site map before entering the site. A detailed site map will aid with the following:
- Planning activities
- Assigning personnel to specific tasks
- Identifying access routes, evacuation routes, and problem areas
- Identifying areas of the site that require use of personal protective equipment
- Providing field teams with more details for their daily safety and health briefings
A site map should show all of the following when applicable to the site:
- Topographic features
- Prevailing wind direction
- Drainage
- Location of buildings, containers, impoundments, pits, ponds, and tanks
Employers should also update the site map throughout the time spent working on the site. Map updates should include the following:
- Accidents
- Changes in site activities
- Emergencies
- Hazards not previously identified
- New materials introduced on site
- Vandalism
- Weather conditions
OSHA notes that overlays can be used to help portray information but should not clutter the map.
