Site Control
Site control is a program with many components. Employers implement this program in the planning stages of a project and modify it based on the information obtained by site characterization. Its goals include the following:
- Minimize potential contamination of site workers.
- Protect the public from site hazards (related to chemical, physical, and biological safety).
- Prevent vandalism.
OSHA notes that the degree of site control depends upon "site characteristics, site size, and the surrounding community." Several procedures to control the activities of people and equipment at a hazardous site workplace must be implemented in order to reach the aforementioned goals. They include the following:
- Compile a site map.
- Prepare the site for subsequent activities.
- Establish work zones.
- Use the buddy system when necessary.
- Establish and strictly enforce decontamination procedures for both personnel and equipment (you will learn about this in the unit titled "Decontamination").
- Establish site security measures.
- Set up communication networks.
- Enforce safe work practices.
