Subpart AA - Important Regulations
The following are some highlights of 29 CFR §1926 Subpart AA:
- When there are multiple employees on the worksite (and not just in the confined space), activities must be coordinated so that the workers outside the confined space do not accidentally make the confined space more dangerous (for example, by running a generator near the entrance which could unknowingly pump carbon monoxide into the space).
- A certified competent person must evaluate the space and the surrounding area and identify all potential hazards before a permit is obtained.
- The atmosphere must be continuously monitored for hazards like low oxygen or carbon monoxide, among others, to ensure that the air remains safe for workers.
- The surrounding area must also be constantly monitored for possible engulfment hazards. For example, if an earthquake occurs some miles away, an electronic sensor could alert workers so they can evacuate the space before a cave-in.
- Employers must provide training in a language and vocabulary that all employees can understand.
