Walking Working Surfaces Regulations

OSHA standards for walking and working surfaces apply to all permanent places of employment, except where only domestic, mining, or agricultural work is performed. These standards are published in 29 CFR §1910.

Specifically, the following OSHA regulations are applicable to walking working surfaces:

  • §1910.22 - General Requirements
  • §1910.23 - Guarding Floor and Wall Openings and Holes
  • §1910.24 - Fixed Industrial Stairs
  • §1910.25 - Portable Wood Ladders
  • §1910.26 - Portable Metal Ladders
  • §1910.27 - Fixed Ladders
  • §1910.28 - Safety Requirements for Scaffolding

OSHA has created safety regulations for various aspects of the workplace. With regards to walking working surfaces, OSHA advises that all places of employment, including passageways, storerooms, and service rooms be kept clean and orderly. Workplace aisles and passageways should be kept clear and in good repair with no obstructions that could create a hazard. A safe clearance in aisles and doorways should be present whenever mechanical handling equipment, such as forklifts, are used.
