What is Heat Stress?
Certain circumstances can cause the body's cooling process to work less efficiently or cease working altogether. These circumstances include the following conditions:
- Extended periods in hot temperatures
- Extended periods in high humidity
- Limited or no air circulation
- Limited or no hydration
When the body is exposed to high temperatures or humidity for prolonged periods, it becomes more difficult to cool itself. Heat stress and illnesses result when the body's salts and fluids are depleted, when the body cannot resume homeostatic temperature, or both.
