ANSI's Standards

Standard 29 CFR 1910.133 includes references to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI is a non-profit organization founded in 1918. It advocates for the growth of industries while keeping worker safety a priority; one of its main goals is to promote voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems within U.S. industries.

OSHA references ANSI standards in 29 CFR 1910.133, which covers eye and face protection. A main component of OSHA's eye and face protection criteria includes three ANSI standards, each of which is incorporated into the standard in its appendix §1910.6.

ANSI/ISEA z87.1-2010

ANSI z87.1-2003

ANSI z87.1-1989 (R-1998)

Note that the last four digits of the ANSI standards represent the year in which ANSI adopted these standards. Therefore, ANSI z87.1-1989 (R-1998) was passed in 1998 and is the most dated of the above-mentioned three standards.

OSHA considers compliance with these standards as equivalent to compliance with OSHA's eye and face protection requirements, and states that "protective eye and face protection devices that the employer demonstrates are at least as effective as protective eye and face protection devices that are constructed in accordance with one of the above consensus standards will be deemed to be in compliance with the requirements of this section."
