Eye and Face Protection - Checklist for Training Employees

OSHA repeatedly reminds us to properly train employees to use and care for PPE, but because each worksite is different, OSHA does not provide a specific list of training items. However, it does provide a general checklist for training employees on how to use and care for eye and face protection. Employers should ensure that employees are familiar with the following requirements:

  • Understand why eye protection is necessary (know the specific workplace hazards that threaten eyes)
  • Explain how eye protection helps minimize hazards
  • Comprehend the limitations of the eye protection
  • Know how to properly put on and take off eye protectors
  • Understand how to adjust straps and other parts for a comfortable and effective fit
  • Confidently wear protective eyewear over or containing an employee's corrective lenses
  • Clean and disinfect the eyewear
  • Identify signs of wear, including:
    • Chipped, scratched, or scraped lenses
    • Loss of elasticity or fraying of head bands
