Hand and Arm Protection - Chemical and Liquid-Resistant (Rubber) Gloves Requirements

29 CFR 1910.137, titled Electrical Protective Equipment, details the requirements for selecting and using insulating rubber gloves.

Blankets, gloves, and sleeves shall be "produced by a seamless process." The standard does not define "seamless process," but this is generally accepted to be materials without seams or materials so well-made that seams (where materials or fabrics join) are minimal. Markings shall be nonconducting, applied in such a manner as not to impair the insulating qualities of the equipment, and shall be confined to the cuff portion of the glove.

Blankets, gloves, and sleeves must have clear marks to indicate their class:

  • Class 00 shall be marked Class 00.
  • Class 0 equipment shall be marked Class 0.
  • Class 1 equipment shall be marked Class 1.
  • Class 2 equipment shall be marked Class 2.
  • Class 3 equipment shall be marked Class 3.
  • Class 4 equipment shall be marked Class 4
  • Non-ozone-resistant equipment shall be marked Type I.
  • Ozone-resistant equipment shall be marked Type II.

Other relevant markings, such as the manufacturer's identification and the size of the equipment, may also be provided.

Note that there are separate requirements for selection and use of insulating rubber gloves: 29 CFR 1910.137 details these requirements.
