Hand and Arm Protection - Metal Mesh, Leather, or Canvas Gloves

Durable gloves made from metal mesh, leather, or canvas will provide employees protection against cuts, burns, and sustained heat. Here are a few of the most commonly used gloves (according to OSHA) and what each protects against:

Leather gloves. These protect against sparks, moderate heat, blows, chips, and rough objects.

Aluminized gloves. These provide both reflective protection and insulating protection from heat. They must have an insert (made of synthetic materials) that will protect against heat and cold.

Aramid fiber gloves. Aramid is a synthetic material that protects against heat and cold. Some glove manufacturers make cut-resistant and abrasive-resistant gloves from aramid fiber.

Other synthetic materials. Some manufacturers make gloves from other synthetic fabrics. These gloves provide protection against the heat and cold, are cut-resistant and abrasive-resistant, and can sometimes withstand contact with diluted acids. They do not properly protect against alkalis and solvents.
