Hazard Controls of Excavations

Before any excavation begins, many things can be done to eliminate or control the hazards presented at a particular site. Utilities can be identified by contacting the applicable utility companies. It is important to note that previous plat details may not be up to date, and as such are not a reliable source for all utility lines.

Subsurface geophysical surveys are the most effective solution for locating any underground installations that might exist at a site. Site personnel should always conduct a thorough walkthrough of a site to identity any signs of public utilities.

Trenches should be properly sloped or shored and inspected at the start of each shift and after a rainstorm to check for fissures, cracks, and any potential condition change. Barriers should be put in place to prevent an employee from falling into an unattended excavation. Trenches greater than four feet in depth must be tested for atmospheric hazards. Trenches must be adequately marked and barricaded to prevent a worker from accidentally falling in.
